hi there

anyone any idea how many hours labour it would take to fit new pistons e.g GMC/OMEGA high comp's, just to give me a rough idea as i might have GMC headwork done at same time.

cheers

I know that it can be done with the block in the car, EG:Andy Knight's rebuild. But I would much prefer to take the block out of the car to work on it, as it could get fiddly. Eitherway, I'd think you were looking at a day, maybe 2 of labour. And dont forget, the gudgeon pins need pressing in/out too so you'd need somewhere that has the propper tools too. Just my 2p. Havent had it done, would love to though<img src= "smileys/grin.gif">

personnaly you need to take tohe block out, I know it can be done without taking it out but if your getting the head done at the same time whats 100 quid labour taking the block out and saving a bit money labour??

What engine work are you planning???

Rebating the pistons is fair enough if you want to lower the compression, but unless youre going forced induction, shouldnt you be trying to increase the compression?

thats the point, high comp ones already have cut outs for vavle clearance and increase compression with the raised dome's. However a guy with a 106 who had pt52's fitted had pockets cut in his pistons for valve clearance. Guess theres pros and cons to both.

no need to take the block out unless your ar re-boring or taking out the crankshaft, even the honing can be done with the block in as long as you stop bits of metal bore going onto the crankshaft with lots of rag. If you are doing it yourself and have no engine hoist then there's no point paying to hire one when most things can be done in situ.
