the late 200, early 300 bhp zone with out spending stupid money?

A lad on our site has a 2.0 redtop calibra turbo conversion on his corsa pushing 270bhp@12psi and 310@14psi and iirc at our last meet he said it has cost about 5k to do in total

could a saxo be put into this territory with 5k?

400bhp supercharged / turbo

Not for that kinda money, the beauty with GM/Vauxhall cars is that pretty much any of the engines can be rehoused into any of their cars.

Like Astra/Calibra/Cav Red tops turbo'd or NA tuned in Corsa's and Nova's. V6's from Calibra/Cav's have also been fitted in Nova's before.

The same cant be said about the Saxo as the best engine was the the 16v TU lump, turbo/super/TB's are all options but for £4k your be doing most of the work yourself.

Engine transplants are possible but for alot more from people like above mentioned Zcars, JamSport, Carworx and Pug1offs.

With £4k-£5k you'd be better off finding a better car like a Subaru etc

5k might put you in the 200 at the the wheels terrotority if you can do the labour yourself. How reliable on that budget is another matter

200bhp imo is around the maximum of 'Usable' power from a front wheel drive car, other will dissagree but I stand by the fact that any more is just a rocket lite it and go.

150bhp-180bhp is probally the most a front wheel drive Saxo would be happy to cope with and still be enjoyable to drive at slower speeds and at home on the track.

have you driven a fwd car with more power? 200bhp is effortless to drive with the right engine, I agree on the last comment though SAAB say about 230bhp is about max for a bog standard road car. But we are not driving standard cars so you can easily build a car that has less compromise in comfort but can handle the greater stresses of a high power engine.

High quality tyres, top notch suspension and a few other tweaks will get you a chassis that can lay down the power far better than someone who has spunked all his money on an engine.

Do you need 300bhp? Well if you are going to race on a drag strip then maybe, but move the competition to a proper track and you could beat him with 150bhp with the right setup.

Most people just want the figure to brag down the pub, and most 2.0 turbo/na red top'd novas end up either just burning rubber or popping drive-shafts. Also I think people over look a well sorted chassis and think chassis tuning is a off the shelf suspesion kit and thats it.

These days things have moved on with cars like type Rs and stuff easy putting out that kinda power but look at the original Focus RS and the current Astra VXR - Can you say 'Torque Steer'. Thats one of the reasons so many RSturbos and 5GTT's are wrapped round trees or down ditches - Shame

A less powerfull well setup car will always out 'drive' Not out 'Run' a more powerfull car. I get now frill out of driving fast in a straight line Im more excited about B roads and track (if Im ever brave enough to take the S on one)
