Networking and interneting...
yo yo geeks.
I treated myself to a laptop... now a slight problem... as im at uni I have an ethernet connection which my big pc currently connects to.
Now with the laptop, it is of course wireless and my PC is wireless too.
What I would like to do is get the Laptop to network with the computer and thus get the computer to transmit the internet to the lappy.
catch my drift?!
The PC runs XP Pro
and the lappy runs VISTA
my wonderful and highly envious rep is up for grabs.

you need a router to conect the internet to and it will send out a wireless signal for the laptop to pick up. i would recommend netgear as there step by step instructions are first class cant really go wrong tbh. the ethrnet plug goes to the router and the router to the pc

what you need is one of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/Netgear-DG83.../dp/B0000TZ8Z8
plug into to your phone line and it will tranmit a wireless signal. you can pick that wireless signal up anywhere in the home usually. fairly easy to set up any problems pm me!

Think you need a wireless router Ads, im not top notch on my wireless information but as far as im aware you cant peer to peer network wirelessly like you could with a crossover cable.
Should be able to pick up a cheap one for not too much though www.ebuyer.com is a good start

ah ok i understand what you need to do is change your network settings to share your internet connection. its quite hard for me to explain because im running vista so cant take you through the steps. but i will try go to the pc open up the network box on the bottom right hand of the screen. get to the properties screen. go to the "sharing" tab and make sure "allow other users to connect through this internet connection" is ticked.
hopefully that will work

is the firewall allowing the laptop onto the pc??, have you turned off the proxy settings, have you used a static ip address, has the laptop picked up the connections

Same as other thread...... ull need 2 NIC cards (Network interface cards) or ethanet ports.
Plug 1 into the wall socket, the other from the pc to the laptop via a cross over cable and setup a network.
However wireless ull need a router. Reason for this is that NIC cards are not capable of sharing an internet connection.
A router is a device that 'routes' packets to their destination. In this case an internet connection. Network cards alone are not capable of performing this function.
IL EXPLAIN IT ON SUNDAY MATE LOL

turn off your firewall temporally to see if it is that which is preventing the internet form connecting.
has the laptop picked up the connections
http://wiki.phoenixlabs.org/wiki/How..._IP_address%3F - do this and post the results this will tell you if your connection is present. do it on both machines (main + laptop)

The above is a typical wireless setup.
Sorry, you can share an internet connection without the use of a router..... and here is how . You need to setup a AD HOC network explained here:

huh?
Looks like you can do it, the pc that has a cable plugged in via ethernet needs to be on at all times and acts as a router really. But your going to need to buy a wireless card to go in your pc aswell as your ethanet connection.
