Default BitTorrent

Does anyone here use BitTorrent?

Can anyone tell me why it is so random when it comes to d/l speeds?

Last night, it was downloading at over 100 kbps and now it wont get over 5 kbps. I know it is probably a busier time of day so more congestion, but 5 kbps on a 2Mb broadband connection is really sh1t.

Any ideas folks?

Depends who your connected too, some people set upload limits so every one can get a fair share. Also depends on the amount of peers, Availability etc.

*Bit-torrent is used legally for downloading software, ie Linux packages*

i only ever use torrent software for downloading backups of software ive already paid for.

Make sure you do too. As the feds are getting hot at working with the ISPs to hunt down torrent traffic

Download speeds very depending on how many people are seeding it and their upload rates.

THERE IS A BIG CATCH THAT HARDLY ANY ONE REALISES WHEN IT COMES TO BROADBAND CONNECTION SPEEDS
You have a 2Mb line but what your service provider doesnt tell you is that thats mega bits (Mb) and NOT mega bytes (MB).

1mega bits (Mb) = 1024 bits
2mega bits (Mb) = 2048 mega bits

You have a 2 mega bits (Mbs) connection. so divide 2048 by 8 = 256
So your maximum download rate depending on the number of uploaders, and your distance from the exchange server is 256Kbps

I thought it was the other way round, a MegaByte = 1024, a MegaBit = 1000.

1 MegaByte = 8 Megabits

megabits for transfer rates and megabytes for storage i.e. hard disks
