You should be ok with the CAT in mate... don't think the VTS' with PH3s in have any trouble with emissions.

The Rallye inlet will be the cause if it does fail

How far out were the emissions mate? Yours has a Piper 285 doesn't it - should still pass no bother tbh.

Most likely mate. It has a 4 branch in place of the standard mani with CAT, so I'm assuming its got a MK1 CAT fitted under the car? Chances are it might be old and past it.

Yeah it does have a cat under the car, the results were....

Exhaust emissions carbon monoxide content at idle excessive 7.3.2c

Exhaust emissions carbon monoxide content after 2nd fast idle excessive 7.3.2b

Exhaust emissions Hydrocarbon content after 2nd fast idle excessive 7.3.2b

Exhaust emissions lambda reading after 2nd fast idle outside specified limits 7.3.2b

thats all it says.

any ideas?

As you say, fault either lies with the CAT or the pre-CAT lambda which controls the fueling. I'd check the condition of the CAT - chances are it's off an older car so if it looks past it, try borrowing another one to try. Failing that, try a new pre-CAT lambda sensor (one with the green plug) - can get them off eBay for around £30 ish.

Also, make sure you drive the car hard before they test the emissions.

Yeah this is the thing mate, the car hadnt been driven properly for a good week or so before they did the test, and had only been driven gently to the test centre, i have another cat which i can put on, and you reckon going for a nice little run up and down the bypass a few times beforehand should help?

sounds liek the cats at fault mate put mnine through a couple weeks ago and i had high CO and lambda but the hydrocarbons were within limits
replaced the cat and everything was cushty and the HC went way down to 3ppm instead of 110.

Saw the for sale ad dude - looks a really good spec, bet it gives a standard valver a run for its money.

A new CAT should do the job - the cheap ones are only really designed to get it through one MOT, a Citroen jobbie will last longer.
