Well I haven't got any photos of it yet, but..

My exhaust has always been loud on my 1.0ltr saxo thanks to the previous owner, and after having a look it's basically this:

Surely there's something missing there? It's deafening on motorways doing 60mph and I've had enough of it.

If there is something missing there, what would I need altogether, and on average how much would it cost?

looks standard. If it's loud then surely you got a hole somewhere?

no its correct lol.

On the mk1 you have a normal mani than a cat underneath and a backbox.

on a mk2 you have a mani cat and silencer underneath (iirc) than a backbox.

All mk1 1.1is ive heard sound a tad noisy.

either live with it or get a new car lol..

No holes, no after market filters, no blowing, nothing.

Looking in the haynes manual and it says that there should be an 'intermediate pipe' that acts as another silencer. I don't see it on mine, it's just one long pipe like the diagram?

Ah okay, that explains some things.

This isn't normal though. I've known a few friends with 1.0ltr saxo's and they're silent. This is a bit of a joke to be honest :/ not sure what it could be..

The sound is definitely coming from the back box. The guy at the garage tried to put a standard back box on but it wouldn't fit in the pipe that's there. It ALMOST did but he said it's still a little too loose.

The thing is though, it all looks completely standard?

take a actual pic of yours but im positive thats how it is lol.

How does the backbox join to the centre section? Is it the standard 'O' Clamp?

I'll take it when I can. That's okay, if you say the Mk1 has a manifold > cat > back box then that's what I have, so that's fine.

In a nutshell - it's overly loud especially doing 60mph, louder than other 1.0's, it's all relatively new (the previous guy told me he fitted a new exhaust), it looks like the diagrams, noise is coming from the back box, no blows.

Is it possible that he's put a standard looking back box on the system with no silencer?

My guess is that it's been cut and slid into the centre pipe, and has a U clamp on it, which is leaking slightly

I'm not too sure on that. If I put my hand over the exhaust tip the car is completely quiet. If there was a leak elsewhere then surely it would still be noisy if I did that?

Keep trying though guys, I've been fobbed off with people going "Oh not sure sorry" so this is really helping

Possibly..

Take it off and shake it too see if the baffles are loose or just buy a new one. Cheap going by the link above^

Hmm, I'd check how the back box connect's onto the centre pipe.

When you fit a new exhaust/backbox, don't you have to take it easy for abit so you don't 'burn' your baffles?

That's what i've heard, so if the previous owner didn't do that, maybe burnt the backbox baffles? Hence why it's not 'baffling' out the noise as much?

that pic looks fine to me mate. i'm still using my 1.1 system and its the exact same. it was a bit loud before because it was blowing at the join at the downpipe. i dropped the 16v in and blew a huge hole in the backbox so its still a fail haha

Like I said though, when I took it to the garage to fit another back box, his standard saxo one wouldn't fit my pipe. It was ever so slightly loose. Could this mean that the centre section is different (which may point to the noise coming from somewhere else, like the cat? No idea..) or could it just be a shit box he's tried to put on? I really appreciate the help though!

The next logical explanation is that the silencer has no baffles inside. If they were loose or broken inside then it should rattle like a bag of spanners.

You mean inside the back box? Apologies, not that mechanically minded when it comes to exhausts.

Brilliant - that's been a huge help.

Just to clarify, you don't think that the noise would be coming from the CAT? The whole thing is brand new so it doesn't help to pin point where the noise is coming from.

If it's the back box he's either:

- Fitted one without a silencer
- Fitted one with faulty baffles

I just got confused when the garage couldn't fit a standard back box on, even though mine looks standard ¬_¬ his was a different size to mine so I wasn't sure if his was shit or mine wasn't standard.
