I haven't read all of this thread, but as a 17 year old, i can see why people do it.

Personally I haven't.

I got my insruance just before the prices all got hiked up, and have paid £1200 on my VTR for the first year. The price of learning/driving at 17 is crazy!

Now roughly lessons at £45 for 2 hours, Theory £50, Practical £120 for test and instructor, the usual tax, mot, services, maintenance - then get hit with a huge insurance price!

I have a friend who drives a 1.1 Saxo, and even on his own policy, car is in his name, 1 years NCB, his 2nd years insurance, TPFT was £1100! This is reasonable compared to some others, people taking out insurance now for boys at 17, are looking at minimum £2000 even on 1.0 and 1.1!

Everyone is telling young people to work, look for jobs etc etc - how can you when it is priced like this?
And yes, i'm sure ill get some responses saying "use public transport for a year and save" - even public transport is getting stupidly expensive for young people.

I get so wound up when you have articles on the tv, with middle aged women in Audi TT's complaining their insurance has gone up by £46 to a HUGE price of £306 a year fully comp.

Yes, I can see why people do it, but I wouldn't. I have paid so much and worked so many extra hours to do it legitimately, I would never risk getting caught out.
