VTR Rear Brake Problem
Hey all - I have a little problem and thought u guys would be the best to ask - I have just stripped down my Saxo (03 plate VTR) to change the rear pads pre-MOT - it looks like they have never been changed with everything pretty much rusted solid!
Anyway - managed to get the pad carrier off and the old pads out, but when I came to replace the news pads the carrier is now too far away from the calliper (approx 8mm) - the piston has been wound all the way in, and there is plenty of room for the internal pad (with the lug) - but it looks as if the external pad is too thick (measured at 11mm).
Do you think someone has fitted discs that are too wide/have too much standoff?
I've looked around ebay and most if not all the pads I saw are a minimum of 11mm thick - any ideas guys?

What are the sliders at the top like? They moving freely?

There was no top retaining-clip bar - just a lower one (that was almost rusted solid) if that's what u meant my slider?

Have a look where the bolts which hold the calliper go, they should move back and forth freely. If not you'll need to get them out, grease them and put them back.

sorry buddy I think i'm being a bit thick - if its the horizontal bottom (and top? although mine only had the bottom one) retaining bars that you are on about then I don't think these are causing the issue - I have the new pads in the carrier fine but the outside pad is physically resting against the brake disc with at least 8mm left to go - so I can't get the 2 x 17mm calliper bolts back in.

Look at the caliper, where the caliper bolts to the hub is done rubber bellows things inside here there should be grease to allow the pins to slide backwards and forwards.
These often seize up and present them selves with the problem you are having .
Free them off, lube them up and away you go, get proper brake grease though not copper slip

You only need the bottom retaining bar.
The calliper has two metal cylinders (see photo) these should move freely. If not they need to come out and be greased (sounds like what the problem is). Take them out and grease them up. Should solve the problem.

I just refurbed the ones I posted above and once there greased they should move without any effort.

and to clarify - these should move the entire calliper/carrier assembly away from the car and free up more room for the outside pad to sit between the disk and the carrier bracket?
