1. Check that the air filter is not blocked or too dirty to clean the air effectively. Inspect the inlet manifold gasket and ensure that it does not have a vacuum leak of any kind. Also check all the associated vacuum hoses for general condition, splits and security of the clips. Remove and check the spark plugs, ensuring that they are in good condition and that they are correct for the vehicle. Re-gap and clean if necessary.
2. The starter motor may be on its way out, if all the other systems are found to be serviceable. Starter motors are rarely stripped down nowadays, but it is worthwhile getting it checked by a professional before replacement.
