your paying for the craftmanship of the manifold more than anything, plus there made from good quality steel (usually) and will outlive the car itself lol.

keep your eyes out for a raceland manifold mate second hand they are really cheap, i picked one up that was fucking mint for £80.

smashing up your cat is just a daft idea, weigh it in to the scrappy and get £20 for it, use that towards a new manifold !!

definately thats what i have done with mine.

4-2-1 manifolds are much easier to source too.

they also offer more low down revs where as 4-1 manifolds free up the revs at the top end of the scale, this is what i am led to believe, and after seeing the improved revs low down on mine, i can only guess its true.

with the cat bashed out you wont be able to use it come mot time

have a look into seeing if a mk1 exhaust system will fit your car and replace the manifold with a mk1 manifold

i think your getting confused, mk2 manifolds aren't more expensive than the mk1 manifolds in fact 99% of the time there isn't any difference just move the oil filter, the only reason its cheap to de-cat a mk1 is becasue its just a cheap de-cat pipe you need (or just buy a mk2 exhaust), but to de-cat the mk2 you need a whole manifold so yes its more expensive to de-cat a mk2 but its obviously its the same price to fit a mainfold to either a mk1 and mk2

if you've got a mk2 with a 4 branch mani, then you wouldnt need a mk1 de-cat because the exhaust will meet the mani...

unless you mean to fit a standard mk1 exhaust system and manifold, which is a lot of faffing around for f**k all difference
