im guessing on a 1.1, straight through exhaust, decat, 4-2-1 manifold and induction may see 10bhp?
all that depending on second hand or brand new could cost around 500-600

Then you may as well just not bother having any insurance as it's illegal...
I'm currently uprating my 1.1 engine it's a lengthy task, it's not really that much fun (a lot of cut knuckles, a lot of dead ends and a lot of swearing) but modding never is simple or quick if you want decent results. Current power is 74bhp, and it doesn't really seem worth it sometimes... but if you want to get into this sort of thing later on in life too, then a 1.1 provides a good learning curve. Just don't expect a fast car at the end of it.

True, but unless you spend at least £800-£1000 you're not going to get more than 100bhp from it!
