Angry Loose Brake Pad = AWFUL noise!! HELP!

I have had a noise, which is gradually getting worse, from my front offside wheel. I have had the wheel bearing replaced which was a little bit of the problem, but the noise is just as bad.

The only way I can describe the noise is that when I brake it sounds like a broken washing machine and I can feel the noise with my foot on the brake pedal! Its awful, you can hear it from outside too.

I have noticed that one of the brake pads are loose in the caliper, so I am assuming that it is that moving about that it making the noise. However, my partner has changed the spring clip that holds the pad in and it has had no affect?

Im not sure whether the clip is the wrong way round, but we have tried a few ways, or whether I need to replace the whole caliper!

Please help, im desperate its awful!!!

Thank you in advance!

try rubbing some copper grease onto the contacting parts of the brake pads.

like on the ends and the back.

but make sure you dont get any on the surface tha touches the disk.

if the pad is loose when the brakes are all together and the pedal pumped up then you either have a seized piston or slider by the sounds of it

whats the slider?
I will get my partner to have a look at the piston. Is this difficult to replace?

Right so i have been told that it is not very likely to be this piston as it is the pad that is on the outside of the disc and the piston is usually related to the pad on the inside...so im told. Is this correct?

Any more suggestions? Im ready to just get rid as the sound is unbearable!!! :'(

The piston in the caliper pushes the inside pad into the disc, and at same time pulls the body of caliper back pulling the outside pad onto disc as well, i'd take the outside pad off and try carefully pumping the brake pedal to see if the piston draws the caliper across, if it does then the piston should work fine, the sliders are on the bolts securing the caliper to the carrier allowing movement of the caliper when the brakes are applied and should be smooth and shiny in appearance, could try greasing these up at the same time.

lol, sorry about that, didn't check the date :o/

Am just getting sooo frustrated with it, have spent over 300 quid on parts and labour (although my sons done most of the work for me), just had to pay the garage to pop the baring and another to swap out the wishbone but fgs, 300 quid, almost complete front end rebuild and the fault's still there
Would be really interested to see how emma got on.

Apologies for dragging up an old post.

Could have been the wrong size pad for the caliper - only got to be out 1-2mm and you'd not know, but would rattle to hell and back on braking.

Carrier could be worn, get a garage to weld the pad heads to fit better

Welding onto a cast iron carrier? Rather replace the carrier for £5 from a scrappy personally!

Welding TO a brake pad? Never heard of that before, and not sure I like the idea at all... Where have you seen this done?

hold on, Mr saxo beat - not the guy with the faux supercharged "show car"? ha
Also screw welding the back of the brake pad for a better fit, i'd just source a good used caliper and new pads!

yup, buy new caliper, job done.

very common on the bendix alloy bodied caliper, the iron carrier wears where the pads sit, and the alloy body around the sliding pins wear.

Seen welding pads in the garage I worked in many times, instead of replacing pad carrier just weld a little on the pads
