Default Gave friend money to borrow

Basically thought I was helping out my friend, over a year ago gave him 900 pounds so he could pay his rent as he just lost his job and now over a year later he doesn't answer my calls has moved place and is in another job but I know roughly were he works what can I do as I have been asking him for money for over 6months

I had the same situation....

One with a girl and one with a good lad mate...

I had quite a lot of evidence from texts and bank transfer etc. for the girl so I threatened to get police involved... (well small claims court)

She paid me back soon after....

I gave my lad mate the money in cash... he stayed in contact until he moved about 60miles away...

Found out he owed like 5/6 other mates money and also owed the money shop for a pay day loan.

He sold his car to pay off the debt when we managed to find out where he lived...

Your options depend on more details... do the latest communication between you suggest he still owes you money? Did you have some form of contract via text for instance or was it all verbal?

For £900, i would be going to someones house, removing their tv, games console, teeth.. Anything of value up to £900..

Wait and see if he has receipts for em all, if he reports theft, say you bought them for your new flat, but it fell through, so you lent them to him..

I know it won't definitely get your money back but in this situation I think violence would be one way to sort it. It might work too if he shits it.

This is why I don't like lending money to anyone other than family. Even with family there's only a few who I'd lend to. Or as smith says go and take stuff to the value of £900.

Never lend a "friend" money. Always causes complications.
But in this case, go to citizens advice out a £5er in the box and they'll help you out. It'll end up in small claims, and wait for judge judy XD

Thanks for the advice guys but as I have said he has now moved house so I don't know where he is living all I know is that he works at a phone shop in town as this what his Facebook status tells me if this is true or not I don't know , might try and make his life hell ie find where he works firstly talk to him about the matter if no response then complain to his company bad service or chatted up my missus other then that I'm a complete dick and have lost roughly 1000 pounds try explain that to the girl friend

I don't know first hand how it works. But I believe it's whatever party looses pays the fees. Just pop in to CAB they'll tell you what you need to know.

I basically sent this to one of said people that owed me money.... it was a facebook convo i had with a girl that studied law....

may be of some use to you, it depends on the person.. sometimes small claims court can be the best (it scared the person who owed me due to certain forms of income)

and sometimes if you have no evidence on your side it's best to threaten... but if you have no idea where they live etc. you are merely gonna come across as a keyboard warrior so in this case that is useless.....

hopefully this convo below may help, as if you do get violent and they dont have the money and you have no evidence you will bring on more trouble and costs than the original 900 you were owed...

Matt

It was all agreed on text.. the amount the person needed to borrow and then i said i had transferred it after we discussed it would be paid back in a month or so time... just not sure what is best to do! I wouldnt of minded soo much but for them to be cowardly and move and block communication has really made me want to take it further.. just not sure what is best to do or if i even have a leg to stand on with the agreement being via a text?

Lauren

Hmmm... I would like to say you'd have the opportunity to take the said person to the small claims court.
I've found this for you. I think, depending on the amount of money, it wouldn't be a great amount of money to list it as the court will take this as a small claim.
This is something I found for you which wil probably help

12:45
Lauren

Can it be shown that money has been both lent and paid back before in order to establish routine terms?
Can it be established that large gifts of cash have not been made before?
It would help if the claimant could provide details of income and savings that demonstrate how unlikely it is that a gift of this amount of money would be made.
It is also worth searching for any text messages or emails that mention the loan.
A reply simply saying ‘thanks for the loan’ or ideally something that specifically mentions the loan request, and emphasises that it is a loan, would be hugely beneficial to a claim.
Without any written evidence of this nature to present to the court, it may be useful for the claimant’s case to open communications with the ex-boyfriend via text message or email, and if possible agree to a date when the money should be deposited back.
This would be to provide evidence that an agreement has been made between both parties.

Find out where he works and where he lives then confront him with a mate face to face and walk him to a cash machine

Does my head in when people do this. Do them a selfless favour and they see it as an opportunity to do you over

I rarely lend money now and never without a signed loan agreement. Even if it's good mates! Agree a date by which they can realistically pay you back then make a note that interest will be charged after that date. And never cash! Just bank transfer marked as 'loan.' Owed money between friends just causes too many problems
