Default Cambelt Help

I'm currently changing the cam belt on my 03 plate vtr. Everything seems to be going well apart from one thing...

When I manually align the belt and turn the crank with a ratchet everything aligns fine. However when I start the car the belt immediately pulls to the edge of the cam (as shown in photo).

I'm using a dayco kit with new tensioner.

I've tried the old tensioner too, same problem.

I've tightened the tensioner a little more, I've loosened the tensioner, always the same problem.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Default Cambelt Help

Is the back of the tensioner flat? If it's not and slightly out it doesn't run true and it can cause this I've found. That said aslong as it doesn't move off the pulley, I wouldn't worry too much it'll be pretty tight. The tensioner should be set then the nut done up to 23nm to

Thanks for the feedback guys. Back of tensioner seems fine. Old one is behaving the same too. Im running my tests without aux belt and covers on. Spent quite a long time varying tension and retesting, if it's as simple as reassembling the covers I'll eat my hat!

Planning to spend some time fiddling with this tomorrow. Have fingers crossed tightly that rewiring the top can cover sorts the issue.

Any other tips/advice before work commences again?

Tried reattaching the top cover tonight and firing it up, no change unfortunately.

Here is a picture of the bottom end of the belt.

It looks to me like the only thing keeping the belt on the is the crank pulley. You can see the edge of the cambelt already looks a little worn where it has been rubbing.

Could it be a dodgy belt? Is it worth whipping the old one back on to test?

This is starting to become a bit of a nasty pain in the backside now!

Again, any help will be much appreciated!

Whipped the old belt and tensioner on tonight. The belt sat dead in the middle. Must be something wrong with either the new belt or tensioner.

Apologies for rekindling this post.

Since work on the cam belt completed I'm hearing a noise that I can only describe as the same sound you get when you reverse quickly coming from the camshaft area, but only when the engine is fully warmed up. The noise gets progressively worse as you increase the revs.

I suspect that I may have tightened the belt fractionally too much which is why I only get the noise once the block has had the chance to expand a bit.

Any views/opinions would be much appreciated.
