Audi A6 (C5) 2.5 TDi V6 S-line Quattro
Hi All,
I've recently purchased a 2002 Audi A6 2.5 TDi Quattro, 6-Speed Manual, S-Line, FSH, 158,000 when bought, full leather Bose Sound.
Some pictures:
Removed the lake under the battery:
Oil, filter, airfiler change:
With the Saxo:
S-line suspension is a must if you line to go round corners, its around 40% stiffer than the standard muck! Doesn't feel like a heavy car and handles decent, need to get the budget tyres off.
2.5 TDi V6 is one of the most underrated engines, due to lack after market mods and the 1.9 TDi being so much more economical. However the V6 has a great power band for a Diesel, it pulls hard from 1.8k all the way to 4.5k+, there is plenty of torque from this engine and its extremely smooth.
The engine is also pretty responsive, you're never sat waiting for the revs to drop when you rev-match down shift, so heal toe'in on a nice B road is still possible along with the S-line suspension and Quattro 4WD, you can still have some fun in it. Obviously like any big German car it is exceptional on the outside lane of the motorway.
Thanks,
Scott

I lol'd at the little review at the end.
Looks nice though, really wanted an A6 before and very nearly bought one, but the owner seemed a bit shady so I left it in the end.

Fighting the corner for the 2.5 V6 TDi! Before I get comments of tuning a 1.9TDi to 160BHP etc. Mod the 2.5 - 300 BHP 600 lb/ft.

Where would you start for modding it though? From what I'd read before, the weak point was the fuel pump or something as standard, so you'd have to start by replacing that then going from there?

AKE Pump is fine for power (180BHP Model). Bigger injectors, turbo, remap a long with a few other bits.

Much work done:
- Cambelt, idler, waterpump (already leaking after 58k miles on it) and all belts changed.
- Rear toe arms and ront track rod ends cut off and replaced.
- Michelin Pilot Sport 3's on the rear
- Aircon Re-gassed, 4c chilly!
173,800 miles

177 is a bit disappointing for the engine size. My remapped bkd diesel makes more than that, and it's only a 2.0 litre.

It's an old engine. Plus it's diesel, torque and where it makes it as well as economy is surely more important? Never understood the whole diesel tuning thing...

I get diesel tuning, up to the point where it becomes less economical than a petrol engine of the same power...
You can make a 306HDi 180bhp from 90, with a bigger turbo, intercooler, and a map.. Will still do 40mpg.. Same power from a GTI-6 and you're looking at 20mpg tops..
Can't a 330d BMW also make really good power with a decent map? With still good MPG?

I found that the mpg from my 330d was kinda crap as standard. Blame the auto box for that tho
But heard it could get better with a remap

Its about torque not BHP. Max torque hits at 1.800rpm all the way to 4700rpm. Six speed box and 4 wheel drive Quattro. Its a motorway cruiser, that can go round a corner nicely, drives better than a Merc E or BMW 5 of the same era, plus the manual gearbox, best interior without fail, extremely well built and in my opinion the best looking of the 3.
Servicing is hardly cheap but do it all yourself and its not a BMW with airbag suspension and all the rest that goes wrong.
The engine is really smooth, you get in and drive, it will handle well on a back road and do 95 MPH for hours on end. Only issues with these are injector pumps failing, and people running them on long life servicing which kills the cams.
Cost of parts for a cambelt, all other belts water pump and everything else that goes with it for Genuine OE parts was £320 which is hardly an issue every 5 years.
Its the final built to last Audi's, I did look at spending more, for a C6 (2006 onwards) A6 but apart from the Interior it wasn't much different, if anything more to go wrong. The 3.0 TDi engine is nice but not as reliable, and a remap on the 2.5 TDi will get you very close to it with better MPG than a standard 2.5TDi, you have to remember the 2.5 TDi is a V6 not an unbalanced 4 pot.
The 1.9TDi's will go to 160 BHP all day long, but the power is in a small band its no fun to drive and sounds like a van.
The car will take 5 people in comfort with luggage or myself 900 miles to Monaco in a day.
I also own a 525d 2002 Auto I don't use it myself, its fine on the motorway but won't do anything else the ride is shocking over bumps as well.
The only reason I didn't get a Merc E-Class W211 E320 (2004 onwards, newer era) is no 4 wheel drive, when things go wrong it costs a fortune and they don't handle as well as the Audi.
Best part is its not another bloody hatch back!
SE vs Sport, in regards to Quattro, they have same set up, just different springs, 1.5m drop for sport and harder springs.

my boss has one of these and we were 5 up and it pulled so well, i was really impressed by it
i had 170bhp in my bmw 320ci and with just me in it it felt so under powered for a big barge
thats the difference between petrol and diesel

i have 170 in my MCS and okay its not massive for the spec, but it IS a hoot to drive, straight line pull is, admittedly in my opinion, boring, but i just couldnt stick this car and "hoot to drive" in the same sentence.

Easy to get to 300 BHP / 700NM torque. Just need a bit of cash like with anything.

177 is enough to move about, that sort of car is not about going fast in the corners (though you can push the esp button and put your foot down) but will eat motorways in return. Then as mentioned above it's about torque, not horse power.
Nice choice of oil
