If you buy the thrashed VTR your going to have problems with it, and probably cost you a fortune to maintain, hardly worth it. Like the guys above said Furio/1.1 just for the first year so the insurance isn't to bad?

Think about running costs, insurance and your ability to drive a "quick" car then go and buy a 1.1 or a westy. Serious

I got a VTR for 2k as my first car, haven't crashed yet and don't plan on it, although I can kind of tell when to and when not to drive like a prick.
I'd say, don't bother, you can buy a VTR for 1200quid but if your on a budget that small then like Saxo180 said, petrol, insurance, tax and of course, VTR thrash replacement parts, I doubt you can afford.
All in with insurance etc at £100 a month I spend £400 a month running my car, yes I do drive alot but heck, that's alot of cash JUST for a car.

Vtr's aren't 'too' fast for a new driver, you crashed it because you drove it like a prick presumeably and couldn't handle it. That's your fault, not the cars. Drive it sensible and like any car, you won't have any problems keeping it on the road.
But judging by you ragging around a Micra and crashing that, chances are you might do the same with an R? Either way, for £1200 - I doubt you'll get an R with decent mileage which hasn't been thrashed.
My two cents

i bought my mk1 vtr with 60k on the clock for 1200, it is fairly common to find one around 1600 just need to haggle it lower, mine hasnt broke or crashed yet, insurance is alot so u need to look into it, as said furios/westcoats are more insurance friendly

loads of mk1 vtr's around for penuts knowhere days, have over 100k on though, but if you look about i've seen 80k ones go with fsh for around £1k, id say with your budget its easy to find a tidy one, just be patient and dont jump at the 1st one you see. Also try to look for one as close to standard as possible.

i started off with a furio, look exactly the same as a vtr too, get a nice set of vtr wheels or vts wheels on it, will look really good imo, cheaper insurance and tax

There is a black mk1 vtr in a garage I had a look at, it was mint 60,000 on the clock fsh going for £1200, can't remeber the garage name but it's on the Newport Pagnell road in Northampton, so not too far from you. As said though you can get one for the money but have a good look around!!
