Default Car Theft - Beware!

Taken from Edition38 where a Honda Civic Type R was stolen while viewed for sale...

The guy seemed to know these cars very well. He looked around the car well, he looked for dents/defects in the body, he said the front end had a respray which I was unaware of.
*
He looked under the bonnet, said the engine was very good.
*
He asked me to take him for a drive. I took him for a spin. He said he had a traders policy and asked to drive the car. I said yes, then when he was finished, he said to swap back over. As I got out the car, he got out, as I was behind the car, he jumped back in and drove off. It all happened so quickly. He spoke very professionally, thought he was genuinely interested as he was asking a lot about the car, he knew a lot about Type R's and was saying he had a DC5 previously but it got written off."

Then to top it all off, the insurance has refused to pay out and sent this letter...

HATE insurance companies for this type of thing!!

Absolutely awful that this happens, but you'd be amazed at how often it does.

When selling your car absolutely insist that no one test drives it without bringing their driving licence (photocard or paper copy with other photo ID) and a valid certificate of insurance which corresponds, keep these in your possession at any point whereby the other person drives it.

Any genuine buyer would be more than happy to provide/bring this type of documentation if they are genuinely interested

Wouldnt wish it upon anybody, but this happens so often because people don't take proper precaution. Did that bloke just take the buyers word for it about having a trade policy?

Unfortunate though.

I'm awrite mate just gimme the keys Imma trader innit. How about proof of ID, drivers licence, proof of insurance and giving/retrieving the keys in exchange for ID and licence back, while inside the car with a mate or two sitting at the back.

Insurance can't be held responsible if you're a thick twat tbh.

And double check with the insurance company, because sometimes the certificate is worth jack shit. I'm referring to those geezers who pay by direct debit and stop paying as soon as they have that bit of paper.

I take customers out for test drives all the time at work and it's always worrying to hear about things like this - working at a dealership, you have to take a copy of their license, home address, what they had for breakfast etc. before you go out which is as much for safety as for insurance purposes which does help.

When we swap drivers, I always take the keys out the ignition, walk round the front of the car with them in my pocket, get in the passengers seat and THEN give them the keys... the bosses drilled that into me from day one haha.

Sucks that the insurance won't pay out for that fella with the Type R - insurance can be a bastard more often than not

Thats why i just don't let anyone drive when they come to look at it. If i do, i put their car keys in my house, or their mates keys

That is awful.

My test drive route is always near my house, if he said to swap over I'd say "nah you're alright, just take it back to mine" which would only be 2-3 minutes away at most.

Jay- why do you hate when insurance companies do this?

If you owned an insurance company would you pay for someone's stupidity? Harsh as it sounds that's all there is to it, feel for the lad but end of the day when someone wants to buy your car you want either:

a) proof of insurance and photo I'd to prove the policy is theirs

B) the full amount in your hand before their arse touches the seat,

Ideally you want both tbf

Hard lesson learned for the owner, shame though

I agree with what you're saying, I really do.

But far to often, insurance companies try to worm their way out of paying out. We pay for a.service so they shouldn't be allowed to they and get out of it.

If I tried getting out of my policy, they'd have none of it.

Couldn't agree more, but in this case they don't really have a leg to stand on, gave someone a key

It's very hard to claim off any policy when a car is stolen with a key, even in a dealership or garage

They're supposed to be locked away

To rub it in further, the thief arrived by train and was collected by the guy selling the Civic.

Go out your way to help and then get f*cked over!

ah yeah that is difficult. still though, he was far too trusting, i'd never let anyone have the keys without some sort of clause.
